Peter Strong is our principal consultant and is the key workshop facilitator.  He also writes reports, submissions and applications.  Peter is the Executive Director of the Council of Small Business Organisations of Australia (COSBOA) and also continues to provide close support to the National Independent Retailers Association (NIRA), immediaste past Chairman of a Bendigo Community Bank Franchise with two branches at Calwell and Wanniassa, a Director of the Independent Contractors of Australia and a member of the Australian Institute of Training and Development.   Peter is a participant in the ACCC's Small Business Advisory Group and participates in various panels and committees mainly representing small business.  He has also been on various otther panels and committees over the years including the Tax Commissioner's Small Business Advisory Group, the Cash Economy Task Force, various chambers of commerce and industry in country townsas well as a member of various education centres and disability support groups.  He was the General Manager for Policy for the Council of Small Business of Australia (COSBOA) for many years before taking up the posotion with NIRA,

Peter has over 20 years experience in developing policy, writing submissions and reports and completing presentations.  He believes that success comes from good administration, understanding of what customers want and need, the ability to take advantage of chances and opportunities that come along and the ability to manage the down times and problems that will also come along.

Peter also owns Smiths Alternative Bookshop in Canberra.

Peter is highly experienced in developing and facilitating a large range of workshops in urban and regional Australia, in remote communities and as part of international aid projects in China, Central Asia, Turkey and Vietnam.

Peter Strong has spent much of the last 20 years in change management at the business, community and national level.  He has worked for the Australian Government as a contractor for not for profit organisations, the World Bank and the United Nations.  He has worked on national training and employment policy and internationally projects aimed at assisting countries  and regions experiencing substantial economic and social change.

 

This has included work in China where he has assisted unemployed women start small businesses through the development of a business incubator,  in Turkey where he has worked closely with Government and community leaders preparing for that country’s entry into the European Community and for coping with the changes coming from industry and enterprise restructuring, in the former Soviet Republic of Kyrgyzstan providing support and assistance in the major structural changes occurring in the early to mid 1990s.  He also developed a workshop on business incubators in Vietnam in 1997.

 

Peter has facilitated conferences and workshops in all these countries as well as throughout Australia on a range of subjects and issues.  He has participated in and managed workshops with Ministers of State in these countries on policy development and implementation for a range of employment and business related activities.  He co-chaired a select workshop with the Australian Tax Commissioner on better engagement of small business operators in the tax support system. He has spent several years as the General Manager of Policy for the Council of Small Business Organisations of Australia where he completed various submissions and press releases.

 

Other highlights include:

Developed a Community Development Toolkit for used by communities wanting to improve their economy and their social infrastructure.

Published several magazines and associated websites and CD-ROMs for business operators, including farmers, to use in recruitment, business management and training. Conducted workshops n recruitment ad raining throughout NSW and parts of Victoria for community business groups and for the public sector.

Developing Memorandum of Understanding between IT business development organisations in China (Suzhou and Tianjin) and Australia.

Completing business plans for specialised business support services for Indigenous business operators in the Barkly Tablelands and East Arnhem Land (including Groote Eylandt).

Managing projects that developed better pathways from school to work for students in various parts of Australia
